Category: Chivalry Amongst the Dead

This was a short novel I wanted to write in the late 2000’s. I eventually put it down, I think because I wasn’t sure where to go with it, and because the theme and style choices I had made influenced the writing process by making it increasingly difficult to continue with the story. I also may have lost interest.

What I have here are the few short chapters I had written for the story, written and presented sequentially. It is the tail of a woman that is dead. And her journey through her own personal after life…

12: Friends of the dead

“Did you think you were the only one with a guide?” screamed Heresy from atop of Eudemonia’s shoulders. Eudemonia had tears in his eyes. With a single drop falling down his cheek and landing on the valley’s floor, it could have filled a lake. She wasn’t the only one going through a journey here. Some […]

11: The lessons of age

Posted on September 16, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

There was a constant grinding sound coming from the boulder Eudimonia pulled behind him, struggling every step. Still, his eyes stayed fixed on some unseen point. The air was cooler now, and the wind was pushing these three travelers deeper and deeper into the valley of black sea. Walking close to Eudimonia, she was fixated […]

10: Chains to Reality

Posted on September 9, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

“That habit of yours to ditch me is getting annoying” proclaimed Heresy as grabbed her shoulder, finally catching up to her. “Oh wow.” he finished, seeing what she could see now. Up ahead in the valley of ash was an ash man. A giant. She nor Heresy could think beyond what they were witnessing. This […]

9: Chains of Cleansing

Posted on September 2, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

Though it was obvious the spec was moving its movements seemed futile. Suddenly the vastness of wastelands became apparent. How far was this mystery? Searching for some defining features among the boulders and canyon walls, there were none. She could find not a single shadow or single point of light once again. Taking her eyes […]

8: The weight of our fathers sins

Faster and faster she went, the terrain blurring around her. Almost feral she could see her goal, the blue light emitting ever so lightly at the far end of this death valley. No more could she see the peaks of the mountains that swallowed this valley in every direction but one, the direction where she […]

7. The descent into growth

Posted on August 19, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

Reaching one hand over the edge of the jagged cliff and then the other she pulled herself up one last time, hoisting her body over the edge only to see all that was so far in this journey. A dark storm still screaming in anger below her, almost completely eclipsing a large body of water […]

6: The Grace that Follows

Posted on August 12, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

Remembering what the sage had said to her high upon the mountain in the freezing snow in the midst of a mental break down in the land of the dead, she found herself in a euphoric state, no longer dreading the pain in her hands or the freezing cold diminishing her body and morality all […]

5: Struggles of Growth

Posted on August 5, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

Nodding at her Heresy began climbing the enormous and black shear mountain that eclipsed all that would be their line of sight. She too began to climb. From the first hand hold it was a struggle. She hadn’t experienced pain in this place until now. The rocks tore at her fingers and palms climbing from […]

4: Circumstantial remembrance

Posted on July 29, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

She could hear music again, it was something calming and relaxing. It brought her back to the afternoon. A green field on the edge of a large city, under an oak tree for shade and the radio on. The blanket was itchy on her back and the egg salad tasted funny but she was happy. […]

3: The Emerging Realization

Posted on July 22, 2019July 30, 2019 by alex

The calm echo of water flowing all around soothed her soul, following a man to the depths of the abyss after just meeting him. Thoughts floated above her making a slide show to fast to watch. A glimpse brings her back to the day she met him; An orange leaf had fallen on her shoulder […]
